Speaker 3 - Shawna Lemay (Photography)

Transactions with Beauty - http://transactionswithbeauty.com/

Presentation Name:A Tale of Three Cities, Meld – Pecha Kucha, Edmonton Design Week 2023

Description: Shawna Lemay is a writer inspired by photography and art. Her books have hit Harper’s Bazaar’s must-read list and the Globe and Mail’s must-read fashion books list. Actor Bella Heathcote recognized her latest novel, Everything Affects Everyone by saying: “Shawna Lemay’s writing makes the miraculous accessible and the mundane seem magical.”

Shawna’s city photography is inspired by artist Edward Hopper’s observation, “There is a sort of elation about sunlight on the upper part of a house.” When travel plans were cancelled, she took to the streets of Edmonton seeing it as a tourist might, through love-coloured glasses, hoping to tell the story of light in our city. Her city photography has taken her from the popularity of an image of the Taco Time in Edmonton’s winter, to spending a month in Rome taking photographs, to being asked to travel to Porto Alegre, Brazil to photograph that city. As the images from each city merge and flow into her consciousness she asks, how does seeing a photograph of a city change how we see ourselves in a city?
