Indigenous Knowledge and Design Week - The Connection
What is the connection between Indigenous Knowledge and Edmonton Design Week 2025? This talk explores the intersection of modern architecture and Indigenous design principles, highlighting how traditional knowledge can inspire long-term, sustainable approaches to building and community spaces.
Through an exploration of the architecture of the Sundance, Sweat Lodge, and Pow Wow, as well as sites such as the Saskatchewan Mystery Rocks and the Sage Wall in the United States, this session will uncover the deep relationship between structure, spirit, and the land.
Guided by the teachings of Elders such as Chief Arvol Looking Horse of South Dakota, we will reflect on the spiritual dimensions of Indigenous ways of life and how they inform design thinking today.
Key themes include access to knowledge, the creation of identity, natural law, and truth — vital concepts shaping both Indigenous traditions and the future of design.
