Friday, October 16, 1:30pm to 3:00pm
Edmonton City Hall
A talk and tour of Athabasca University's architectural school and how education is being transformed through online and hybrid learning
Did you know that Edmonton is the largest major city in Canada without a dedicated university-level school of architecture? Athabasca University headquartered 150 km north of Edmonton offers the city’s only opportunity to study architecture online. Join us for a talk and virtual tour of the AU RAIC Centre for Architecture to explore how online and hybrid learning, innovative teaching approaches, and emerging technologies are transforming architectural education and expanding access to the profession.
Architectural education is undergoing significant transformation as new technologies, learning models, and approaches to inclusion reshape how future architects learn and practice. This presentation will explore emerging models of architectural education, with a particular focus on online and hybrid learning, innovative pedagogies, digital technologies, and expanding access to design education.
The session will introduce attendees to practical examples of new approaches, including the e-studio, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital design tools, cloud-based Building Information Modeling (BIM), and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). It will also examine how these technologies can support more flexible, accessible, and collaborative learning environments while preparing students for a rapidly changing architectural profession.
A highlight of the presentation will be the work of the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University, including its new makerspace and e-studio. The session will also introduce the Centre’s forthcoming hybrid Master of Architecture program, scheduled to launch in 2027.

Friday, October 16, 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Stephenson House, 12323 102 Avenue Northwest, Edmonton,
Three designers who've worked across Edmonton and abroad discuss method, place, and what shapes—and could shape—our design identity.
A conversation about method, place and the way we design. Does Edmonton have a design language? How does where we work influence what we make? And what can we learn from designing across cities, provinces and borders?
It will be an intimate panel discussion with three prominent interior designers/architects that have experienced designing in Edmonton, as well as other provinces and countries.
We want this to be a candid, engaging conversation about what design in Edmonton looks like, and COULD look like in the future.

Through the lens of Indigenous tourism, the conversation will consider ideas of land, stewardship, hospitality, storytelling, community, ancestors and future generations, and the role design can play in supporting those relationships.
Over drinks, appetizers, and facilitated conversation, the evening will explore some of the frameworks, practices and questions raised by the book and consider how they might inform our own approach to design.
